(travelling assistance may be available). Stay tuned for more details, and put that date on your show calendar if you think you may qualify!

Note that for 2008, we are changing the format of our shows to fit the new Equine Canada/Dressage Canada Competitions System format. A Bronze show (equivalent of Primary shows) will be held over 2 days and a Gold show (equivalent of National) will be held over two days.

2007 Dressage Rules are still in effect and are available for download from www.dressagecanada.org. (substitute Bronze & Gold for Primary/National in the terminology). There are new General Regulations for 2008 and those are available from www.equestrian.ca (Note that Amateur status must be applied for now per new General Regs and criteria).

CLASSIFICATIONS OF SHOWS - DEFINITIONS:

BRONZE COMPETITIONS:

Bronze competitions are comparable to “Primary” shows under the previous system. They are now sanctioned by Equine Canada.

Riders must be members of
a) Dressage Winnipeg (or temporary membership),
b) Manitoba Horse Council (or temporary membership, required for insurance coverage purposes)
c) Equine Canada Bronze Sport License ($20)

Your horse
a) Is NOT required to have Equine Canada identification (passport)
b) The horse’s owner must be a member of Manitoba Horse Council for insurance purposes

Show results are NOT submitted to Equine Canada or Manitoba Horse Council. You ARE eligible for Dressage Winnipeg Awards.

Dressage Winnipeg understands that the Bronze Sport License, the Dressage Canada $7 levy and drug testing fees are additional fees for competitors under the new system, so we have decided to waive the Mandatory Tack Stall and make tack stalls optional for competitors (as long as aisles are still kept clear to comply with fire and insurance regulation - NO tack, feed or other storage in the aisles, you will have to keep tack and feed out at your truck or trailer or in your stall if you choose not to use a tack stall) and to reduce the admin fee on entries to $15/show weekend for 2008 in order to assist competitors in upgrading from Primary to Bronze shows in the new system.

GOLD COMPETITIONS:

Gold competitions are comparable to “National” competitions under the previous system. They are sanctioned by Equine Canada.

Riders must be members of or have
a) Dressage Winnipeg (or temporary membership),
b) Manitoba Horse Council (or temporary membership, required for insurance coverage purposes)

c) The horse’s owner must be a member of Manitoba Horse Council for insurance purposes

Show results ARE submitted to Equine Canada and Manitoba Horse Council..

You are eligible for Provincial Awards, Dressage Canada National Gold/Silver Awards, Lauren Dilanni Award for Freestyles, the Dressage Canada Eight Program, as well as for Dressage Winnipeg Awards.

Both Bronze and Gold competition entries are required to follow EC MEDICATION CONTROL RULES (FOR RIDERS) and EC DRUG RULES (FOR HORSES). Entries in both types of show pay pay a drug testing fee and may be subject to drug testing on a random basis during competitions.

General Overview of our Shows:

(in the event of a discrepancy between this info and the prize list/rule book, disregard this information!)

Shows normally start with the more basic tests in the morning and progress to the higher-level tests ridden later in the day. There are sometimes Musical Freestyles, which are often scheduled as the last classes of the day and are considered the most entertaining part of the show for the spectators, to see horses and riders dancing together to music.

Ribbons, awards and other prizes are presented to the riders based on their points total. Scoring in dressage is similar to figure skating in a way.. 100% being the absolutely perfect ideal and the winner being the one with the highest score, who thus most closely approximated the ideal. Each movement or figure on a test is given a mark out of 10 possible points, with the average being around 5-6 points and going up or down from there depending on quality of the movement and overall performance of horse and rider. The scores posted as a percentage are thus a combination of the scores for each movement with some having more weight than others, and overall impression and technical quality scores factored in.

There are three classes of competitors: Junior (all riders who have not reached their 18th birthday as of January 1st of the current year), Adult Amateur (per definition on non-professional status) and Open (either Junior, Amateur or professional).

Stabling on the grounds is available, and a lot of riders come in the night before with their horses to eliminate the stress of trailering in the morning of the show. Shows often start very early in the morning (7:30-8:00 am) due to the large number of competitors in certain shows. They are usually over by supper time each day.

Spectators are more than welcome and admission is free. Parking is plentiful.

Dressage Winnipeg shows are governed by the rules set by Canadian Equestrian Federation/Equine Canada.

Dressage tests in use at these competitions may be found online at http://www.dressagecanada.org/DressageTests/dressagetests.html

Juniors must wear ASTM-approved helmets.

All tests are now held in a 20m x 60m arena. (see diagram)

(all measurements are in metres)
