Each month, Dressage Winnipeg will highlight one of our members.
Kate Wagar Kate began riding at the age of 7, in Winnipeg, Manitoba. Growing up, Kate rode and showed Arabians and saddlebreds in both hunt seat and saddle seat. Between ages 18-27, Kate worked as an FEI groom and manager of international show jumping horses in Calgary, Alberta and Los Angeles, California. During this time, she travelled extensively to competitions throughout North America, and spent significant periods of time at the Wellington Equestrian Festival, HIITS Thermal, Spruce Meadows, Thunderbird Show Park, and on the Indoor circuit, including the Washington International Horse Show. Kate continues to place a strong focus on horse health, welfare and management based upon the skills and knowledge she cultivated in this role.
Upon returning to Winnipeg, Kate developed an interest in dressage, and began training with Ariana Chia in 2017. Kate is currently enjoying the opportunity to ride a wide variety of horses and develop them up through the levels. Kate’s goal is to consistently produce horses who are happy and healthy in their work, and she is currently working towards her debut at Prix St. George in late 2024 or early 2025. Kate remains grateful for, and humbled by the ongoing support of all those who have played a role in her continuing journey in the sport.
During the week, Kate works as a lawyer and spends any free time she has with her judgemental dog, Henry.
