Each month, Dressage Winnipeg will highlight one of our members.
Heike Beckmann Heike Beckmann grew up in Poplar Point on Manitoba Hanoverian Stable. She has been around horses throughout her childhood and participated in Pony Club until she graduated high school. She moved to Calgary to attend college and stayed because there were better job opportunities. Once done College, she worked for Spruce Meadows for 5 years in the office and volunteered many years after for the tournaments in the hitching ring. After Spruce Meadows, she found her career in the investment industry where she still works. Unfortunately, during the time in Calgary, she was not able to ride much but in 2018 was able to build a 200’ x 80’ riding arena on the home farm in Manitoba. Thanks to COVID-19, Heike was able to move back to the farm to join the home breeding stable to continue the tradition to breed high quality Hanoverians in Manitoba, together with her mother, Barbara Beckmann. During her time back in Manitoba, she has opened a Pony Club Center in 2021 to give the English discipline riding students an opportunity to learn and ride in the Portage la Prairie area. 2022 was the first time Heike participated at a Dressage competition, through Dressage Winnipeg at Bird Hill Park. There she did well with a home bred gelding, Eddie Murphy MHS at the Training level, achieving above 70% by the September championship competition. While keeping her full-time job, this year’s goals are to continue to learn and improve her own riding skills while training the young horses at Manitoba Hanoverian Stable through out the year to take them to competitions and clinics in Manitoba. She will also continue to teach and coach some of the young students in the area and help the Pony Club kids achieve their levels while she continues to work towards completing the Equine Canada Instructor certificate.
